Intel Graphics For Mac: Tips and Tricks for Optimizing Your Apps and Games

To see if an app is using the higher-performance discrete GPU, open Activity Monitor and click the Energy tab. If you don't see the Requires High Perf GPU column, your computer only has one graphics processor.

Intel Graphics For Mac

To escape the Safari sandbox for our Pwn2Own 2021 submission, we exploited a vulnerability in the Intel graphics acceleration kernel extensions (drivers) on macOS. This post will detail the bug and how we went about exploiting it to achieve reliable kernel code execution.

On Intel-based Macs, the graphics acceleration service is named IntelAccelerator, or IOAccelerator. Opening this service is explicitly allowed by the renderer/WebContent sandbox, although it appears there has been some effort to restrict allowed user clients and external methods. While Safari has a separate GPU process, IOAccelerator is still allowed by the WebContent sandbox profile (as of writing).

All necessary drivers for the Intel graphics units in Mac Minis running OSX are provided with/integral with the OSX provided by Apple. No additional drivers/updates are available unless provided by an OSX update or OSX upgrade

I find all this particular bizarre considering the number of job posts Apple have and do post for Mac graphics driver developers. You would think an infinite number of monkeys could come up with better drivers. ?

I have a Mac Mini running MacOS 10.13.6, with an Intel HD Graphics 3000 384 MB graphics card. Google Chrome isn't recognizing the graphics drivers as usable for WebGL. See: WebGL disabled or unavailable on Chrome / MacOS

Steve - Knew about the Thunderbolt expansion chassis. The issue is what graphics cards with have OS-X drivers that you could use. So far these products have teased us but will they ship and will PCI card vendors make the needed drivers. Thats why I said it's wishful, not real yet and may never be.

It depends on what you need, Intel 4000 is integrated, and uses system RAM to operate. Upgrading to ram increases the ram dedicates to video, for example I'm running 16GB on my 6.2 and that bumped the VRAM to 768MB, the OS may be able to Modulate this up to the intel limit (2Gb I think I read somewhere, but don't quote me) But I haven't seen it yet. Keep in mind this will always be DDR3, which is slower than a dedicated card. If DDR3 isn't fast enough for you, Thunderbolt may someday be your solution.

No, there isn't. The problem is that, because it is not supported, there is no driver provided by Intel to manage the Intel HD Graphics engine. Instead, Microsoft provides a "compatibility" driver that makes a best-effort attempt to support it. The problem is you have a laptop with hybrid (dual engine) graphics and the compatibility driver does not know how to handle this.

Next up is Borderlands 2. Again, a fairly modern title, but one that's really optimized for current generation consoles - making high-end processor graphics more than up for the task. While a higher TDP implementation of Haswell's integrated graphics wouldn't have an issue here, things are a little more difficult with a 15W TDP.

When I was a kid all I wanted was a console that could play arcade quality ports of Street Fighter II and Mortal Kombat II. These days, even the latest Street Fighter title has no issue playing on free graphics:

I am running Ubuntu 12.04 64bit on MacBook Pro 15" 2010 (MacBookPro6,2) and I would like to use the integrated Intel graphics instead of the dedicated Nvidia graphics Ubuntu boots with on this machine.

Just following up on a thread I posted this past summer. I've been noticing some activity on the King's Bounty Crossover Compatibilty page. It says that it's compatibility is 'Gold' status, but I have to say otherwise. Intel's on-board GPUs in the new Macbook Pro 13"s are not optimized for mac graphics, but I can easily get the game to run in Windows 7 boot camp mode will all the graphics settings on maximum. King's Bounty is not a graphically intensive game - but I am curious to know if the team at Codeweavers has made any further attempt to get their software optimized with intel's chip found on newer Mac 13's.

Inadequacies with Intel GPU chipsets and 3d Games in Crossover boil down to the drivers for the cards on the Mac, as you've noted, and I'm afraid that there really isn't much that we can do. Crossover works by translating the windows d3d calls to openGL, and then sends those calls to your graphics driver for rendering.

Windows 10 can detect new graphics cards and install the drivers automatically. However the drivers are not up-to-date and sometimes interfere with setting up an external GPU. We recommend using DDU to uninstall the Radeon Pro drivers that came with Apple Boot Camp drivers (part of Boot Camp Assistant in macOS). DDU can also disable Windows automated graphics drivers installation so that you have full control of which drivers version to use. If you have a Mac with Radeon dGPU and plan on using a Radeon eGPU, the modified drivers from bootcampdrivers.com is the best approach to use both dGPU and eGPU concurrently.

Keep in mind Apple itself has not provided support for external GPU in Boot Camp. Therefore the following steps to set up an external graphics card with your MacBook Pro can possibly cause bootup issues. We highly suggest the use of the Windows System Protection feature. You can create manual Restore Points that capture snapshots of Windows in order to revert changes should you run into trouble.

I have already installed refind and copied the .efi file. However, when I boot into Windows, I can see two Microsoft basic adapter things. But when I tried to install the Intel graphics driver, it always said that my system is below the minimum requirement. How can I fix this?

Hi there! SO I am succesfully running an egpu and driving my intel graphics at the same time. But I just ran into an issue. I unplugged one of my thunderbolt 3 hubs on accident one day and now my internal macbook pro display sticks on the windows logo. My system recognizes the display is there but I cant display anything on it. Anyway to fix this?

In a surprising turn of events, Cities: Skylines dethroned the legendary SimCity as the best city simulator out there. But it does require a powerful Mac to run well. Recent Macs with integrated graphics may be able to run it on low settings, but that will be a challenge.

i have a mac mini 2014 with i5 processor , 8 gb Ram, and intel iris 1536, and it runs fine with resolution high and graphics low, and all the other things off. i have read that the filters are very demanding so i set them to disabledthe only worry i have is that the fans of my mac make a lot of noice and that it gets a little bit warm.

SketchUp is a graphics-heavy application. We suggest always keeping your graphics drivers up-to-date. Updating drivers can often correct odd visual behaviors such as freezing, artifacts, model slicing, and slow performance.

Once you know the kind of graphics card you have, visit the manufacturer's website to download the latest driver. Here are links for downloading drivers from the most common graphics card manufacturers:

Parallels Desktop has no access to the Mac's device's physical graphics cards. Instead, Parallels Display Adapter driver (which is part of the Parallels Tools installation) interfaces with virtual hardware and provides 3D acceleration features. The actual acceleration is achieved by translating Direct X commands from the guest OS to the OpenGL API on the macOS side.

Most Mac computers have an integrated graphics card, which is built into the motherboard and shares memory with the CPU. It provides a more economical alternative to the standalone card, known as "discrete graphics" or "dedicated graphics." In this case, Parallels Desktop will use the resources of the built-in Mac built-in graphics.

If your Mac has discrete graphics, Parallels Desktop can use the macOS "Automatic graphics switching" for its virtual machine(s). To learn more about the feature, please visit the Apple's KB HT202043.

Recommended are OpenGL 2.1 (or ideally better!) capable GPUs from AMD. Modern Intel graphicschips will also work well on Linux, not on Windows for more simple tasks with lower needfor performance.

Modern Intel HD-Series graphics cards should work reliably for mediumcomplexity workloads on Linux. Current OpenGL-3/4 GPUs may expose additionaluseful features. The absolute minimum requirement is OpenGL-1.2 support, butfunctionality and performance will be very limited with such old GPUs, and usinggraphics cards with only functionality older than OpenGL-2.1 has not been testedby the developers in years.

Basic Psychtoolbox functions should work in theory on any OpenGL 1.2 capablegraphics card with at least 16 MB of video ram (VRAM), with the mentionedoperating system specific restrictions in mind, ie., somewhat broken onWindows multi-display and broken on macOS for non-trivial use cases. Fast stimulusdrawing and use of the more advanced features requires recent graphicshardware. However, we do strongly recommend at least OpenGL 2.1 capablegraphics hardware for full functionality and good performance. Older graphicscards are no longer tested.

For optimal performance and functionality on Linux we recommend AMD or Intel graphicsover NVidia graphics, due to the high quality open-source drivers for AMDand Intel graphics. For advanced functionality like fine-grained timing viaFreeSync or Displayport adaptive sync, choose AMD. Ditto for HDR displaysupport.

Older Intel graphics cards are problematic for all but the most trivial visualstimulation tasks: While the Intel GMA X3100 series cards and similar are alsoDirect3D 10 compliant in theory, in practice they suffer from limitations.Users of Intel-based Macs should be aware that some Macs (e.g., old IntelMac Book) use a built-in Intel GMA graphics adaptor. The GPUs of the GMA-950series are known to have very low graphics performance and a very restrictedfeature set. They are cheap and sub-standard by any definition.
